To transfer a website after purchase and settlement you will need to consider 3 key areas. The domain name, the hosting and any related supply or other contracts. Buying a website can be a complex process, so make sure it is done with care.
The Domain
- Ensure the seller has unlocked the domain prior to transferring
- Provide the seller with all you admin details including name or company name and contact details including email address. Make sure the email address is one you have access to as the Transaction ID and security code will usually be sent to this address to approve the transfer. Note, some registrars might treat the process slightly differently, make sure you read up on how the particular registrar you are getting the transfer from operates.
- Give the registrat some time to effect the transfer, usually around 24 hours
The website
This process will depend on whether you are taking over the existing hosting, setting up new hosting with the same provider or moving to completely new hosting. Each will have its own set of challenges specific to your hosting provider. We recommend technical assistance to effect these options. Talk to the sellers hosting service help desk to understand the process in detail and how they typically manage transfers.
Other Contracts
- Sales agreements are transferred or resigned with the client/s
- Supply agreements are transferred or resigned with the applicable supplier
- Affiliate, Adsense or advertising agreements are transfered, set up correctly for the new accounts and that any ocde required in the site as result of these changes is in place
- Any licenses for content or other are transferred or resigned.
Don't forget to work through out website buyers checklist.
